Husky Love and Dog Sledding Adventures in Canada

CANADA Welcome to the world of winter adventure. Alongside us, we have the fearless animals of Whitehorse Yukon – The Dog Sledding team. Husky love

Mushing what?

I experienced my very first ‘mushing’ adventure, or a more commonly known term as ‘dog sledding’ with Muktuk Adventures tours this winter at Yukon, and I have to say – the Whitehorse dog sledding experience with them was truly phenomenal.

XXL Size Lydiascapes and her Santa Sled all to herself. Coming in the low peak season means that you have a sled all to yourself! Which also means no monkey business too, if not you will crash into a tree.

Dog sledding is probably one of the things I never really thought of adding into my bucket list. I mean, for an adrenaline junkie like myself, how exciting can a bunch of small dogs pulling you be?

Dog Sledding is unbelievably fun!

These amazing sled dogs and Whitehorse huskies at Muktuk Adventures are going to wow you beyond what you expect, especially if you are already a dog lover.  Enthusiastic and excited the minute you enter their big compound, they are barking, howling and jumping around joyfully when the Muktuk staff go about picking and choosing the dogs for the sledding.

Picking the right sled dogs

Picking the right dogs for the best sledding performance require quite a bit of skill and understanding of these affectionate creatures. Like humans, they have temperaments, moods, strengths, flaws, likes and dislikes. So it is important to arrange them properly and strategically to get a smooth-sailing ride. In competitive sled races, sled dogs are swooped around during the race dependent on their stamina ability for different stretches of the terrain/ race.

After much ado, I have my 4 amazing dogs

-Sweet team player lead dogs Skor and Hazel, with smart Yuki as the middle swing dog and strong but naughty chocolate brown Gobo at the wheel. These guys are amazingly fast and full of power. We were literally sailing along so quickly all the time that I had to jam my snow boots hard into the ground to slow them down. However occasionally when they do get tired, you should give the sled a push to help them along ( which these smart ones really appreciate).

Layering up for the sled ride

Before you set off on your mushing journey, the Muktuk Adventures crew with load you up with layers of warm winter clothing, beanies, jumpers and snow boots. I have never worn so many clothes in my entire life, and the eventual outcome had me transformed from my usual XS size to XXL.

I finally understood the need for so many insane number of layers of clothes, it was rather chilly and cold as the winter wind blows you while you sled along.

Off we go dog sledding into the winter cold…

Overall, I must say this has been one of the highlights of my Whitehorse Yukon trip. I would recommend anyone who is thinking of visiting Whitehorse Yukon in winter to give dog sledding at Muktuk Adventures a go. The service was excellent and the prices ranges from USD$160 onwards depending on the season and duration of your dog sledding.

So make sure you experience mushing once in your lifetime and be prepared to crave for more after.
